Volunteers Sought for Community Work Day at Ko`ie`ie Fishpond

When are community work days held?`Ao`ao O Na Loko I`a O Maui is currently recuiting volunteers to assist in the restoration of Ko`ie`ie on the second and last Saturdays of every month from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. School and community groups can also schedule a special work day by contacting us in advance.

What will volunteers be doing? Volunteers will help dig up rocks and boulders that are submerged and buried in the sand and will replace them on the fishpond’s wall. This is an activity that will take place in several feet of water in the ocean. ‘Ao‘ao O Na Loko I‘a O Maui’s staff and volunteers will be on-site to give background information about Ko‘ie‘ie Fishpond and the restoration project, will review safety procedures and will work side-by-side with the day’s participants.

Who is able to kokua (help)?Volunteers who are able to comfortably lift at least 25 pounds, are welcome to participate. This type of work can put a strain on the body and we are inviting people who are physically fit to kokua. We may also find other ways that volunteers may kokua if they are unable to do the above listed work and if other activities are available. Space is limited to twenty people and reservations are required. Please note that all volunteers will be asked to sign a waiver and if you are under the age of 18, an adult will need to sign the waiver on your behalf.

What do I need to bring?Volunteers need to bring their own work gloves, drinking water, towel, sun tan lotion, sunglasses, and other personal items for a day at the beach. Volunteers must wear sturdy close-toed shoes or tabis and use protective clothing such as a long sleeve shirt or rash guard. Bathing suits may be used however during the actual restoration work, we request volunteers to wear protective clothing to avoid injury.
