Are you looking for a way to give back to Maui and enjoy a Hawaiian cultural experience at the same time? `Ao`ao O Na Loko I`a O Maui (Association of the Fishponds of Maui) is happy to announce that we will host another community work day to help restore Kieie Fishpond in Kīhei on Saturday, February 14th from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m.. We are recruiting volunteers to take part in this monumental event in which volunteers will help dig up rocks and boulders that are submerged and buried in the ocean and will replace them on the fishponds wall. Aoao O N Loko Ia O Mauis staff and volunteers will be on-site to give background information about Kieie Fishpond and the restoration project, will review safety procedures and will work side-by-side with the days participants. Volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate.
Kieie Fishpond is one of the last remaining Native Hawaiian fishponds along South Mauis coastline and is by far the most in-tact along these shores. This cultural treasure was built more than 500 years ago by Native Hawaiians and has weathered many natural disasters. However, because of neglect over time, the wall has slowly crumbled. Aoao O N Loko Ia O Maui works with Mauis communities and recruits volunteers to help with the restoration of the fishponds wall. In addition, the association educates students and the public regularly about the host culture and fishponds.
