Fishponds and their remnants are found throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Moloka`i is known to have many laced upon its coastline while other islands have few scattered along their shores. On Maui, Ko`ie`ie is one of the most accessible and approachable fishponds and is open to the public. Others are privately owned or have barely visible footprints.

Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement Huaka`i at Maui’s Koieie Fishpond with `Ao`ao O Na Loko I`a O Maui

`Ao`ao O Na Loko I`a O Maui (Association of the Fishponds of Maui), in partnership with the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement (CNHA), will host a Huaka`i at Maui’s Koieie Fish Pond on Friday, July 11 from 2 to 4 p.m.

CNHA hosts a Huaka`i twice annually to provide individuals from every walk of life the opportunity to fellowship and energize by engaging in cultural activities, most times in a location not far from home or employment.

The Koieie fishpond Huaka`i will offer participants the opportunity to build the fishpond’s ancient walls and learn the traditional methods of passing rocks from mauka to makai (upland to lowland), the concept of an ahupuaa (traditional land division from mountain to sea), the importance of kapu (taboo), as well as the ideas of lokahi (unity), laulima (cooperation), and to malama (care) for the aina and kai (land and sea).

Don’t miss out on this great cultural experience and join us! For more information or to register, contact CNHA by phone at 808.596.8155 (from Oahu), or toll free at 800.709.2642 (from neighbor island), or via e-mail at events@hawaiiancouncil.org. Registration is closing on Thursday, July 3rd.

The Huaka`i program is partially funded through an ECHO grant received by the Bishop Museum from the Office of Innovation and Improvement of the U.S. Department of Education. Education through Cultural & Historical Organizations (ECHO) provides educational enrichment to Native and non-Native children and lifelong learners.
